About

Welcome to Renaissance School of Sewing & More for Youth.

Renaissance is a peaceful, happy and “Safe” place where children, adolescents and teenagers enjoy learning, discovering and developing their inner talents, through the fine Arts of Sewing, Cooking, Basic life skills and Character development.

At the age of ten, returning from my first independent shopping trip to Woolworth's department store, in downtown Windsor, I saw a sign that read, “Paul The Tailor” having no idea what a Tailor was at age ten, I was quite puzzled as to why it almost seemed like my name. Sitting there perplexed, the invisible hand of God wrote a statement in my mind, in white letters, which read: Taylor = Tailor.

Getting off the bus, I raced home to ask my beautiful Grammy, standing at the stove  as usual, cooking something wonderful, what a Tailor was.In her typically kind and gentle manner, she explained in sufficient detail, that a tailor repairs, alters and makes clothing for people.

Walking away, feeling thoroughly satisfied, I was suddenly halted in my tracks. Everything I saw in my mind on the bus and now heard my Grammy say, rose up within me. And I heard myself agree. As I proudly proclaimed out loud “Well if that’s what a Tailor is, then I guess that’s what I Am!” And after all these years, that’s exactly what I am. A Fashion Designer/ Craftsman and Tailor.

My Grandmother who raised me, believed in me. She bought my first sewing machine and was delighted with everything I created. She and my Mom were best friends and my greatest supporters. When I'd make certain Crafts, Mom would purchase them. And with much appreciation she'd say, “This is Art!!”  My Mom, Beloved Grandma and Grandpa are all in Heaven now but their wonderful influence in my life still lives long and strong.

I believe my Mother’s Acknowledgement and Appreciation for my Sewing Art, is the underlying reason why our name has been changed to: Renaissance School of Sewing & More 4 Youth. We believe in youth. “Freely as you have received, Freely give” Right? My Family, and My Faith in our Heavenly Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit are the foundations Renaissance School of Sewing & More 4 Youth, rests upon.

Renaissance is a place created especially for children. As childhood is the best time for kids to learn new things and be introduced to the joy of the hands-on-sewing experience! My courses are developed to inspire design, colour, co-ordination, technique, planning, preparation, goal setting and much more. All of which leads to personal discipline, self-esteem, stick-to-it-iveness and productivity.

Renaissance was founded in 1995 by me, Karla Taylor. My first courses were offered strictly to Adults. Then to High School students, seeking a future career in this field.

Several years later, I taught my Dressmaking Course at St. Clair College where I met Christy M. a 16-year-old high School student, wanting to pursue her degree in Fashion & Design from Ryerson University. However, the dressmaking course didn’t come easy to her. To pave a way for her, I invited her to study under me for two years as a private student. Afterward, she  was accepted at Ryerson University as one of the 175 student applicants taken from over 2,500 applications! Now it’s time to reach out to more children. I hope your child enjoys partaking in our well- proven classes as much as we enjoy teaching them. I
